Hollywood nominates Solo Leveling for 'best anime'

The popular Korean webtoon-turned-anime, "Solo Leveling," has received a nomination for 'Best Anime Series' at the 2024 Astra TV Awards. Although the anime category is new, the Astra Awards had previously honored "Attack on Titan" in the category of 'Best Animated Series in Streaming'.

The Astra TV Awards have officially announced their nominees for their upcoming annual ceremony, which includes the new category of 'Best Anime Series' aimed at honoring outstanding works from the previous year. In addition to "Solo Leveling," the awards show has recognized works such as Netflix's adaptation of Naoki Urasawa's "Astro Boy" murder mystery, "Pluto"; the Western production "Blue Eye Samurai"; and the animated sequel to the cult classic Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, "Scott Pilgrim Takes Off."

Crunchyroll is represented by "Solo Leveling" as well as the fantasy anime series "Frieren: Beyond Journey's End." Adult Swim's "Ninja Kamui" has also received one nomination in this category, bringing the total number of nominees to six.

Only Leveling

The Astra Awards, formerly known as the Hollywood Critics Association TV Awards, are held annually by the Hollywood Creative Alliance. The awards program's mission is to highlight diverse and inclusive emerging talent that might not be recognized by traditional awards shows like the Emmys and Golden Globes. This is the first year that the awards show has a category dedicated to anime; Attack on Titan previously won the award for 'Best Animated Series in Streaming' last year. On the same show, Hayao Miyazaki received the award for 'Best International Filmmaker', while the fantasy anime film "Suzume" lost to "Spider-Man: Across the Spiderverse" for 'Best Animated Feature'.

The 2024 Astra TV Awards will be broadcast live from the Avalon Hollywood on August 18, 2024. The power fantasy series has been a huge hit with fans, particularly internationally, with many eagerly awaiting the release of the second season. "Solo Leveling'sbrand of overpowered absurdity and complex, fluid fight scenes seem to resonate with viewers due to its candid focus on storytelling.

The second season does not yet have a release date, but fans recently enjoyed a first trailer at the Anime Expo 2024. The trailer featured a showdown between Jinwoo and his enemies, accompanied by a new song, "4eVR" by Hiroyuki Sawano. Producer Sota Furuhashi has previously indicated that the second season will place a greater emphasis on exploring the many supporting characters that have often been overlooked.
