MAPPA will make the remake of Ranma 1/2

 

On the official site for the new anime adaptation of the manga written and illustrated by Rumiko Takahashi, "Ranma 1/2", the first promotional video of the project was revealed. The video confirms that MAPPA Studios is in charge of the project, that the premiere is scheduled for October 5 in Japan, and that the voice cast of the original series returns for this remake.

For his part, Rumiko Takahashi began publishing the manga through Shogakukan's Weekly Shonen Sunday magazine in August 1987 and finished it in March 1996, compiling the work in a total of thirty-eight volumes. The play was adapted into an anime in April-1989 by Studio Deen, and was followed by a new 143-episode adaptation in October-1989, produced by the same studio.

Recently, "Urusei Yatsura", another of Rumiko Takahashi's works, also had a new anime adaptation forty years after its original broadcast.

  • Hiromi Taniguchi (PSYCHO-PASS, Deca-Dence, Youjo Senki) is in charge of character design and animation direction.
  • Kaoru Wada (Inuyasha, Princess Tutu, Hanyou no Yashahime) is in charge of composing the soundtrack.

Synopsis of Ranma 1/2

Ranma Saotome is a first-class martial artist and a prodigy of the Saotome school of martial arts "Anything goes". During their training in China, he and his father meet a terrible fate when they accidentally fall into a cursed spring. Now, Ranma has the curse of turning into a girl when cold water splashes on him, and only hot water can turn him back into a boy.

Things get even more complicated when Ranma discovers that his father has arranged for him to marry one of Soun Tendo's three daughters to secure the future of the Tendo dojo. Although Soun learns of Ranma's situation, he remains determined to go ahead with the engagement, and chooses his youngest daughter Akane, who happens to be an expert martial artist and has a reputation for hating men.
