Homura Kawamoto launches a new story where an ordinary man relives his past as a fighter to save his daughter.
Renowned Kakegurui author Homura Kawamoto has released a new manga titled Kenka Oji-san – Namo Naki Chūnen, Tsuyo Sugiru (The Anonymous Middle-Aged Fighter Is Too Strong). The series debuted this Sunday, May 11 on Kakao Japan’s Piccoma digital service.
A desperate father and his hidden past
The story follows Fuyuo Shigaraki, a divorced, penniless, and seemingly ordinary man. His life takes an unexpected turn when a mysterious “high school fighting girl” proposes a quick way to get money: fight. Motivated by the need to raise three million yen for his daughter, Fuyuo agrees… only to reveal that, in reality, he was a former professional MMA fighter, and the only one who managed to draw with the current world champion.
With his combat instinct awakened, Fuyuo launches himself into a new stage of his life where only his fists will lead the way.
The prolific legacy of Homura Kawamoto
Kawamoto is widely known for Kakegurui – Compulsive Gambler, a manga he began in March 2014 with Tōru Naomura in Square Enix’s Gangan Joker magazine. The work inspired a successful anime adaptation in July 2017, with a second season in January 2019, and also two live-action seasons and films, all available on Netflix outside Japan.
In recent years, the author has diversified his catalog with titles such as High Card, a poker-themed anime released in January 2023; and manga such as Bōryoku Banzai and Serial Killer: Isekai ni Oritatsu – Isekai Battle Royale, exploring everything from the supernatural to extreme violence.
With Kenka Oji-san, Kawamoto continues to cement his reputation as one of the most prolific and versatile creators of contemporary manga.
